So I’m making dinner the other night and I hear the Christmas ornaments clinking together ever so lightly.
Then as I’m putting the pasta in the boiling water, I hear a small rattle coming from the living room.
And while I’m stirring the spaghetti sauce, I hear the rip of paper and this little voice say, “uh oh”. And all I can do is stand at the stove and chuckle silently as I imagine the look on his face. Poor kid! I’m sure at this point he thinks he might have just jeopardized his place on Santa’s nice list.
Then, as I’m finishing cooking dinner, my mind is wandering.
How am I going to keep these kids from peeking under the tree?
I could just leave the tags off the gifts until Christmas morning. And I imagine my husband opening Lego’s and the boys opening men’s shirts because I get the boxes all mixed up. Hmmm, maybe not.
I could just leave the gifts hidden until Christmas morning and then bring them out. But then, really, what’s the point of putting up a tree if there’s not going to be gifts under it.
Or how about if I hook all the gifts to an alarm and every time that someone touches one of the gifts, the alarm would go off throughout the whole house? Oh my gosh, how traumatizing would that be!
Dinner’s almost ready so I bring myself back to reality.
And since the rest of my ideas weren’t exactly the best, I wonder if I can maybe “encourage” him to stop peeking under the tree with surprise cookies or something like that.
And the wheels start turning…
It needs to be a thicker cookie.
It needs to have some substance to it.
A cookie base that would hold up to a surprise being hidden inside.
And it HAS to be easy!
Ohhhh… let’s try changing up the Monster Cookie Recipe and see how that goes!
We can start with two packages of Betty Crocker Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Mix and follow the rest of the recipe the way it is.
Press a Dove Chocolate in the middle and form the dough around it. Throw it in the oven… and wait for it…
And It’s Perfect!
Now, every night that the boys don’t peek under the Christmas tree, we get to enjoy a No Peeking Cookie. And we guess what flavor surprise is in the middle and in some cases, we swap or share whatever flavor we pick. They get a surprise and a reward for not snooping under the tree. It’s a win-win, right!?!

(Disclosure: This situation actually occurred several years ago. The boys are now in high school and college and don’t really peek under the tree anymore.)
