Do you remember that worn out old desk that I was bragging about that I picked up at the What Cheer Flea Market? I introduced it to you in the What Cheer post linked below? Well, I have been tenderly nurturing it for the last few weeks. I wanted to bring out the beauty in the old desk. I couldn’t do much with it until my older son moved to college as I was going to put it in his bedroom for now. His bedroom is going to be my “office” while he’s at college. At some point, I’d like to move it to another room in the house but we have a few things to accomplish before I can find another space for it.
As you can see from the before picture, it had been used and abused quite a bit! But I loved the simple style of it and the carved names gave it so much personality! I really have a soft spot for unique items. (If you haven’t figured that out yet!) I actually had been looking for some type of desk or table to use for my blogging. And when I saw this beauty, I just knew it was meant to be. It was love at first sight!
I did dicker with the vendor a little and got it for $5 more than I wanted to spend so I didn’t think that was too bad. And thankfully, it fit into the back of my vehicle for the ride home. It would have been an issue had it not! I wasn’t really prepared for it to not fit in the back. But between the desk and our other finds, thankfully, we had just enough room. Whew!
After I got it home, I cleaned it up as best I could with soap and water. And realized in the process that some of the edges were going to need a little sanding. There were a few of them that had started to splinter and I really didn’t want to take a chance on having them splinter into my skin. And while I had the sand paper out, I gave the top of it a rough sand. I wanted to remove a little of the varnish that had started to turn white. I liked the crackle effect it had but I didn’t like the white splotches. Then I simply added a couple of good layers of lemon oil.
Have you ever used lemon oil? I’m amazed at how well it works to refresh older pieces of wood! I’ve used it numerous times and am always happy with how they turn out. Given that this piece was very old and hadn’t been taken care of, I did a couple of sandings and have done several layers of lemon oil. I really like how it turned out! What do you think? Isn’t it pretty?!?
I can’t wait to find a place to put it more permanently and be able to enjoy it more. Someday soon… For now, I’ve decorated it a little. Do you like my desk organizer/vintage breadbox? It’s the perfect place to keep all my camera accessories corralled!
